An American Castle

If you’re looking for an interesting excursion in a warmer area, we may have just the spot for you! Out in the central part of Florida you’ll find a curious home belonging to Howard Soloman and his wife. Actually, its more than just a home. This wondrous structure is filled with art and sculptures created personally by Soloman from discarded materials such as broken appliances, car parts, and steel. This museum home is better known as Soloman’s Castle. In Ona, Florida away from the hustle and bustle, out near orange groves you’ll find this serene estate where you can take a guided tour of the galleries, walk the gardens, or eat at the on site cafe. The gardens also feature interesting sculptures created by Soloman.

Everywhere you gaze, you’ll find a piece of him. The castle itself is aluminum from newspaper printing plates. How ingenious is that? The castle stands three stories tall, but don’t be surprised if when you get there he has added on another story. He loves to build.
The cafe, better known as The Boat in the Moat is quaint. It is run by Soloman’s daughter Alane and her husband. All the food is prepared there in their kitchen, and you can dine inside or outside -weather permitting.

They also have a room guests can stay in. The Blue Moon Room is on the East side of the castle and sleeps two adults. You’ll want to call ahead if you plan on staying in the Blue Moon Room. For directions and more information, you can visit their website. If you plan on staying in your RV we should mention that Ona, Florida is about 35 minutes from Arcadia, Florida where you can find many RV parks to camp at, and other outdoor adventures. One campground that stood out above the others is Riverside RV Resort and Campground. They have a calendar of events going on right there at the campground and they also list local events. They’re even a hop, skip, and a jump over to Sarasota, Florida where you’ll find De Soto National Park, Jungle Gardens, and The Ringling Museum of Art.
All in all we think this little area of Florida may be just the ray of sunshine you’re looking for during these next couple months of chilly winter weather.
